Women’s Rights - Photojournalism

Written by Ebony – Gateway Learning Community Trust

I am Ebony and I want to help empower women and help educate people on gender equality. I also want to be able to open new pathways for the bright futures of women and help them to conquer their dreams without fear. I feel as though it should be a priority in schools to talk about it.

In the image above, I can see strong women who are fighting for their human rights. They gather together with homemade signs in hopes to be seen and listened to, making their voices heard for those who are too afraid to do so. This image, in particular, stood out to me, as it shows their strength, power and bravery. More so the subject is very important to me because women are still being objectified, abused and oppressed due to their gender, this needs to stop.

1 in 3 women will experience violence, and yet over 60% of
victims that have experienced this violence are too afraid to
seek help of any sort.

This image makes me feel enormously proud to be a woman as it shows their strength and empowerment, but also the pain and extremes that women have to go to when trying to obtain even basic rights and equality.

I think that the message the photographer is trying to communicate is that women are no longer afraid, with them willing to stand up for themselves, and make their voices heard, no matter how hard they have to fight. This is because it is a clear representation of women’s strength and showing solidarity, standing together until they are heard.

Another aspect I like about this image is the women standing tall and strong, unafraid, not worrying about the possible consequences of their actions, while focusing on their strength and the importance of being noticed. It puts an emphasis on how genuinely important this subject is, and the significance of women’s rights. This is because it is a clear representation of women’s strength and shows solidarity, that they will stand together until they are heard and positive changes are made.

Information collected in 2016 by, the United Nationals Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), found, that women and girls suffer the most during violent conflict, due to inequality and discrimination.

They are at a higher risk of sexual violence, exploitation and trafficking during war, with, 1 in 5 female refugees and internally displaced people have experienced sexual violence in countries affected by conflict. These may be some of the many things that encouraged these motivational women to speak up for what they believe in and are passionate about.

When it comes to gender inequality, there are many economic issues. According to the World’s Women, 2015, women spend at least twice as much time as men on domestic work and when all work (paid and unpaid) is considered, women work longer hours than men. On Top of this, information collected by the World Bank, 2018, says that over 2.7 billion women don’t have the same work opportunities as men, due to laws restricting the types of jobs they can do. All of this information is more than enough reasons for these women to decide that enough is enough and that we need to be listened to!
