Conservation Changemakers' Toolkit (for young people aged 13-25)

Business team working in a start-up office

Overview

Chester Zoo, together with other young changemakers, have created a Conservation Changemakers' Toolkit for aspiring young changemakers. The toolkit has been developed to empower and enable young people to take action in their own lives for a more sustainable future.

Broken down into modules, the toolkit explores a range of ways to take meaningful actions to support the environment, conservation and sustainability.

Module 1: A first look at what it means to become a conservation changemaker by providing some useful introductions to wildlife conservation and different types of social action, including: Campaigning, Protesting, Volunteering, Fundraising, Craftivism and Tangible Actions.

Module 2: Includes a Changemakers’ Project Organiser which includes lots of planning tools and techniques to help someone to become a changemaker in conservation. It also provides really useful guides for how to actually plan or do some of the examples of social action as well as some handy resources to support your wellbeing and confidence.

Module 3: Provides an opportunity to reflect on what skills have been learned and how the project went. It includes a Changemakers' Reflective Journal which has prompts along the way to help provide insight into what went really well and where there may be areas of improvement for next time.

Leaders Guide (for facilitators of young people)
They’ve also created a handy ‘Leader’s Guide’ to help take facilitators of young people through the steps within the toolkit in a group setting. Whilst each young person can still access the toolkit and produce their own ‘Project Organiser’ and ‘Reflective Journal’ – developing key skills in teamwork, collaboration, organisation, listening and more along the way – you can work with them collectively to develop a ‘Conservation Changemakers Project’ together.

This guide can help users maximise the impact of working in partnership with the local community. Community and stakeholder engagement in a youth social action programme involves young people working with other interested individuals or organisations to deliver action and change. The engagement can help increase access to students' learning opportunities, boost student retention, promote optimism among teachers, and improve children's school attendance rates.

This guide's main aim is to help you understand the importance of teamwork when young people are working together on a group project. It gives you an overview of the different departments in organisations and the various roles young people can play in these departments. It explores the different stages of teamwork, such as forming, storming, morning, performing, and adjourning, and applies these to the five steps of Youth Social Action.
